Maritime Leadership

What began as a summer job during film school evolved into a defining chapter of my professional life. Starting as a deckhand in Long Beach, I worked my way through every role on the vessel—from First Mate to Bar Manager—learning the intricacies of hospitality, logistics, and high-speed operations. This journey culminated in earning my USCG 100-Ton Master Captain’s License, a milestone that transitioned me from a participant to a leader responsible for the lives of passengers, the safety of the crew, and the integrity of the vessel.

Being a Captain is about more than navigation; it is about maintaining a "safety-first" culture in the engine room and a "people-first" culture on deck. I gained a reputation for being a trustworthy and skilled operator, which allowed me to branch out into vessel deliveries and competitive sailing regattas across Southern California.

To me, leadership is the art of motivation. I believe in teaching not just the how, but the why. By understanding what motivates each individual on my crew, I’ve been able to build high-performing teams that remain cohesive even in the most unpredictable maritime conditions.

Technical Synergy: The Sea and the StagePeople are often surprised to learn how closely maritime skillsets mirror live production engineering. A boat is a complex, closed-loop system where failure isn't an option.

  • Rigging: The physics of securing a mast and tuning a sailing rig translate directly to the safety protocols required for rigging lights, speakers, and trussing on a live stage.

  • Cable Management: The discipline of "lines on deck" is the maritime equivalent of cable management at a live venue—ensuring a clean, trip-free environment for operational safety.

  • Systems Thinking: Managing onboard power, hydraulics, and navigation systems provided the foundational "technical grit" I use today to troubleshoot broadcast air-chains and IP streaming workflows.

The Horizon AheadWhile my professional focus is dedicated to the evolution of live production and media technology, the sea remains my greatest teacher. It has taken me to places I never dreamed of and introduced me to a global community of thinkers and doers. My goal is to eventually return to the water on my own vessel, continuing to explore the world’s coastlines while applying the same discipline of exploration and excellence to my career in technology.
